Type design

One typeface, priced several ways, and the buyer picks the one they need.

A font is not sold by the file. It is sold by what the buyer intends to do with it, which means one set of outlines is several products at several prices, and the page has to make that obvious rather than confusing.

How do I sell fonts online?

Publish each licence as its own product: a desktop licence, a web licence, an application licence, and the full family beside the single weights. Upload the files each one delivers, state in the product what the licence permits and for how many people, and let the buyer choose the tier that matches their work instead of writing to ask. Payment and delivery happen together, so a studio buying at the end of their day gets the files immediately and you are not the bottleneck. Sell the same catalogue from your own site, from a post and inside a chat thread, and keep the customer record so your next release has somebody to go to.

How to start selling your typefaces.

Getting started

Four steps, in order. Each one is a screen you can open on the first day, not a project.

  1. Decide your tiers before you upload anything

Desktop, web, application, and whatever else you genuinely offer. The tier list is the price list, and changing it later means re-pricing every release you have already published.

  2. Publish the family and the weights separately

Somebody who needs one italic should be able to buy one italic. Somebody outfitting a studio should be able to buy everything in a single product at a single price.

  3. Put the licence in words on the product

How many people, which use, whether it can be embedded. A buyer who can read the terms on the page does not open a thread to ask, and a buyer who cannot will ask every time.

  4. Attach the files to the tier they belong to

A web licence delivers web formats. A desktop licence delivers desktop formats. The download is the licence made real, so the two should never disagree.

What is different about selling type.

What is different here

Every kind of product has a detail that decides whether the software fits. These are the ones that decide it here.

The price is about use, not about size

Two buyers download identical bytes and owe different amounts, because one is setting a menu and the other is shipping an application. Tiers as separate products is how that stays legible instead of turning into a quote request.

A family is a bundle that has to be worth buying

If nine weights bought together cost the same as nine weights bought one at a time, nobody buys the family. Pricing the whole as its own product is what makes the bundle a decision rather than arithmetic.

Releases go back to people who already bought

Fixing a kerning pair or adding a weight is a new file on an existing product, and everybody who bought it can fetch the update without you writing to any of them.

The licence is text, and it is yours to write

Crate delivers the files and carries your terms with the product. It does not count seats on your behalf, so the terms should say plainly what you expect, and the trust that follows sits between you and the buyer.

Your buyers are already in a thread.

Where you sell

Type is found in specimens and in other people's work, then bought quietly. Put a real product behind the post so a designer who has decided at eleven at night reaches a checkout instead of a reply in the morning.

In your market that usually means Your store, Instagram and In person.

Every channel above runs off the one catalog you set up once.

Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay and bank transfer.

Getting paid

Buyers pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or bank transfer in US dollars, and the files are released by the payment rather than by you. Automatic payouts to your bank.

Money from card sales lands in your bank account on a rolling two-day schedule. Nothing to claim, nothing to withdraw.

How the file reaches the buyer.

Delivery

Delivery is a private link built for that purchase, with a download count and an expiry you set. Upload a revised release later and the same link serves the new files to everyone who already paid.

  • The moment the payment clears, the buyer gets a link of their own. Nothing waits on you being awake.
  • The link is tokenised and limited. It belongs to that order, it expires, and it cannot be forwarded around indefinitely.
  • Upload a new version and the same buyers can fetch it again, so an update is a re-upload rather than twenty five emails.
  • Large files are served directly, so a slow connection resumes rather than starting the download again.

What it costs.

One subscription covers the store, the catalog, the order queue, the customer records and the counter. There is no separate charge for selling in chat, and no charge per kind of product.

Priced and paid in US dollars. Every plan opens with a free trial and no card.

You have the price and the plan now. Standing the shop up is about fifteen minutes of work.

Selling fonts, answered.

Can I sell desktop and web licences at different prices?

Yes, and that is the intended shape. Each licence is its own product with its own price and its own files, so the buyer chooses the one that matches their use and pays accordingly.

Can I sell a single weight and the whole family?

Yes. Publish the weights as products and the family as one more product at its own price. A single order can carry either.

Does Crate enforce how many people use my font?

No, and this page will not pretend otherwise. Crate delivers the files and publishes your licence terms with the product. Seat counting is not something this platform does, and any tool claiming to do it for a typeface that has already been downloaded is claiming more than it can deliver.

What happens when I release an update?

Replace the files on the product. Everybody who already bought can fetch the new version from the link they already have, and nobody needs an email from you to get it.

Which file formats can I deliver?

Whatever you upload. Desktop and web formats can sit in the same purchase, or in separate licence tiers if that is how you price them.

Where does the money go?

To your own payout account, in US dollars. Money from card sales lands in your bank account on a rolling two-day schedule. Nothing to claim, nothing to withdraw.

Still have a question?

Every answer above was written by the people who build crate. If yours is not among them, the Help Center goes deeper, and a person reads what you send.
